Together with the process of Self realization and Yoga execution we are dealing with our habits.
The most strong and difficult to control is the tongue and belly demands. Our habits in this area are so difficult to restrain, so that we are struggling with that attachments if we want to avoid them.
In this whole topic is one main point that we must develop a certain understanding and sensitivity to really control that habits and it is the quality of compassion. This goes on many levels of self realization not only at the beginning when one is trying to convince oneself about the truth to not kill animals to eat their flesh.
On each higher and higher level of our development of the consciousness we are discovering more and more deep understanding of this compassion areas to gradually come to the point we love the animals so much that we treat them like a children cute, innocent, helpless and unprotected. And what is then realised is the love they have for us, their friendship and interest to have our association, where the distance between us and their inherent nature, even as a wild beasts somewhere disappears in relationship with someone on that high level of Yoga.
So this practice of non-violence is starting from the mechanical process of restrain and ends with spontaneous loving relationship with the sweet and loving other living beings, so we can talk to them and accept even the presence of a fly or mosquito without any problems and see God in every 'heart' of that living being.
Then the point of Vegetarianism is a natural thing and eating vegetables, grains and fruits is very pleasing, satisfying and sufficient to our diet.
And then there comes the level of consciousness where we feel we do not need the food at all, that Prana or Cosmic Energy is sufficient to live...
